In reply to Judy Toope. I'm sure what's stocked in each Michael's store is different, but I would think you'd be able to find both the hook and yarn online. If you haven't used that size hook and yarn before then yes, it is definitely an adjustment to work with! But lots of people use fine yarn and small hooks and love it. :)

There are two ways to crochet a circle – in continuous rounds or in joined rounds. While joined rounds end with a slip stitch and then a chain 1, continuous rounds are worked without joining, which does result in a spiral. You can see this spiral in my photos here as well. I use a stitch marker to keep my place since it’s hard to tell where one round ends and one begins without it. Hope that helps!

When doing a flat circle and using your instructions. How do you keep from not getting a spiral look? In most circle instructions now days I don’t see a chain 1 and turn for the next row to keep from a spiral look. I also can’t count my rows without writing them down. Can you please explain.

Thank you for the clear post and photos. I tried the half color change but then switched back to the traditional method, as the previous comment says « super good enough » in my case.
With yarn over, I noticed the half color change makes a sort of crease on the last row of first color. It’s adding a sorta 3D effect I hadn’t foreseen… well, if anyone notices, I’ll say it was on purpose

Thanks for breaking down all of these approaches, Jennifer! The photographs are very helpful in knowing which one to use to get different effects. Sometimes the traditional method is super-good-enough, but sometimes it’s worth the extra effort when you want a really clean line and I love how you’ve shown the details so clearly.
